EDWS Architects Ltd is an Architectural Practice run by Ewan Stoddart BA Hons Dip Arch RIBA, who founded his practice in early 2020.  

EDWS Architects offer a full range of turnkey RIBA professional architectural services, from concept design, through to planning and detailed design, on site supervision and practical completion.  

Prior to setting up EDWS, Ewan Stoddart spent his first 14 years working for a well-respected Brighton based practice assisting on a number of projects within the city including the new Brighton Library and Open Market Redevelopment schemes, as well then leading on a new art facility building within the grounds of the Grade II listed Lancing College, and a bespoke recording studio located on Hove seafront.  

In 2014 he moved on to new challenges take up position has Head of Architecture South East, for the well-respected global real estate provider Savills Uk Ltd.  During a fulfilling 6-year tenure he worked on a number of interesting projects with clients including The Goodwood, Cowdray, Firle and Leconfield Estates as well as winning during his time 2 Sussex Heritage Trust awards.  

A number of his projects have involved working on listed properties over the East and West Sussex regions, with an emphasis on quality lead design and detailing, including a full appreciation of local building materials and when called upon ‘period correct architectural details and solutions.  

Heritage Statements

When looking to carry out any works to a historic building of interest which is designed Listed (either Grade II / Grade II* or Grade 1) is a requirement to have prepared alongside any architectural proposals an accompanying Heritage Statement. 

EDWS Architects can prepare full detailed heritage statements to assist as part of any listed building application for consideration by the relevant local authority, the level of work involved represented by the level of detail in turn required.

Measured Surveys

EDWS Architects can prepare in house accurate Lidar Scan surveys of small to medium sized properties available in 2D and 3D formats. 

If the property / structure in question is larger and more complex, then we would be happy to recommend reputable surveyors who can carry out full measured / topographical site surveys.  

Feasibility Studies

Feasibility studies are a great first architectural stage in establishing the viability of a project compared with an initial client prepared brief. 

Our first stage feasibility study service is available in a number of formats, dependent on the complexity or scale of the project in question. 

We can provide upon client request alongside any sketch schemes / detailed proposals fully prepared quantity Surveyor cost reports, estimating all associated cost including all key specialist consultant input required along the way (eg engineer / mechanical and electrical / below ground civils / ecology etc). 

Examples:

  • Alteration / extension to a residential property 
  • Alteration / extension to a Grade II Listed Property 
  • A review of a site for single or multiple use applications (residential / retail / commercial / educational etc) 
  • An assessment of Local, regional, and national planning policy in particular regard to the local planning authority in question.  

Concept Proposals

EDWS Architects provide a detailed and tailor-made conceptual proposals service which assists in establishing a client’s particular needs and objectives, including all likely constraints and opportunities that may exist. 

Building Control / Construction Packages

Once planning permission have been formally obtained EDWS Architects can prepare and submit detailed construction and building regulations packages to the local authority / approved inspectors for formal consideration.  

Anyone wanting to carry out building works which are subject to the Building Regulations are required by law to make sure it complies with al statutory regulations such as Fire, means of escape, acceptable thermal performance etc.  

Preparation of detailed construction packages are dependent on each individual projects brief and needs, all detail information requirements will be prepared in co-operation alongside client appointed specialist consultants, which are likely (but not exclusively) likely to be 

 

  • Structural and below ground civils engineers
  • Mechanical and electrical consultants
  • Ecological consultants (bats / trees etc)
  • Party Wall Consultants 
  • Rights of light / Sound reports 
  • Fire Consultants 
  • Land Contamination Consultants 
  • Community Infrastructure consultants 
  • Principle Designer (required under Heath and Safety CDM Regulations)  

Contract Administration

Whilst undertaking any building works, of any size or complexity a client should always look to have prepared alongside a building contract of some form – ideally care of the Joint Contracts Tribunal (referred to as JCT Contracts). 

All JCT contracts are administered by a third party Contract Administrator (not the client or contractor), who is responsible for making sure conditions of the contract are adhered to throughout the contract and post contract period. 

 

Building contracts consider such items as Contract Period, Interim Payments, Liquidated Damages, Contract Amendments and Defect Liability Periods.
